A mysterious plastic bag of animal heads was found in Rhode Island last month, and is believed to be connected to an unknown animal sacrifice ritual.
The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) said that the bag of remains are "from animals that were sacrificed as part of a religious ritual," according to WPRI.
East Greenwich, RI police found the plastic bag on Feb. 25 near a boat launch, and said it contained a calf head, a lamb head, a goat head and several rooster heads.
The RISPCA said that there were also grains, colored materials, and two hand-drawn pictures found in the bag. The grains and materials were associated with other religious animal sacrifice rituals, but not the pictures.
Earl Newman, a RISPCA humane law enforcement agent, spoke about the bag of animal heads and the possible connection to a religious ritual.
"There’s several possibilities and different religions that participate in the sacrifice of animals, but as far as being able to identify that religion at this point, we’re not able to do that positively," Newman said.
This isn't the first time that a collection of animal heads were found in Rhode Island, as the RISPCA has been working on a case for over a year regarding the "ritualistic sacrificial killing" of several chickens, according to WPRI.
There is up to a $5,000 reward provided by the Humane Society of the United States to anyone that can provide information leading to an arrest for the person responsible for killing the chickens.
"Hopefully this reward will allow us to secure information to lead to a closure of this case," Newman said on Feb. 1.
