During the news conference, Beto O'Rourke, the Democratic candidate running against Abbott in the 2022 Texas gubernatorial election, confronted Abbott over the school shooting.

O'Rourke appeared to start shouting while he walked towards the stage where Abbott was sitting with other state leaders, including Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker Dade Phelan, Senator John Cornyn, Senator Ted Cruz, Congressman Tony Gonzales, State Representative Tracy King.

O'Rourke was held back by a police officer, and then directed by others to stop and to leave. Reporters began to crowd around O'Rourke while someone on stage yelled at him, "You are out of line."

It's not clear what O'Rourke was saying at Abbott and the other leaders.

He then followed the instruction of security and walked away from the stage.

O'Rourke then spoke to media outside of Uvalde High School,

"He [Abbott] told the parents he would do something, he did nothing," O'Rourke said. "He came to my hometown of El Paso after 23 people were slaughtered, he said he was going to do something, he did nothing.

"In fact, the only thing he did was make it easier to buy a gun. The only thing he did was make it easier to carry a gun in public. And he bragged about the fact that there would be no background check, no training, no vetting, whatsoever. He talked about that this was evil, the only thing evil is what he continues to do to the people of this state.

"He says this was unpredictable, it was totally predictable. And I predict this will continue to happen when you continue to have a governor who will not stand up for the people of Texas. His only interest is the gun lobby. He's scheduled to speak at the NRA convention this Friday in Houston, Texas just days after these kids were slaughtered."
