In a speech Thursday, President Biden declared the U.S. war in Afghanistan will end August 31.
“We did not go to Afghanistan to nation build,” Biden said about the nearly 20-year war. “Afghan leaders have to come together and drive toward a future.”
Rejecting calls for troops to remain on the ground in the country, Biden said: “I will not send another generation of Americans to war in Afghanistan, with no reasonable expectation of achieving a different outcome.”
“How many more, how many more thousands of American daughters and sons are you willing to risk?” he asked.
The president said while he does not trust the Taliban, he trusts the Aghan military’s ability to defend its government, noting it was “highly unlikely” for only one government to be in control there. Biden said the military is now better trained, better equipped, and more competent.
“The mission was accomplished in that we got Osama bin Laden and terrorism is not emanating from that part of the world,” he said.
