Alex Murdaugh was found guilty by a jury Thursday of murdering his wife and son, according to multiple reports. By Friday morning, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
According to CNN, the 54-year-old was found guilty of the “grisliest and most severe of the allegations,” he faced. CBS News reported that the jury took just three hours to deliberate on the case.
CNN said the Murdaugh, a former South Carolina attorney, is the “scion of a prominent and powerful family of local lawyers and solicitors,” in the state. He was accused of killing his wife, Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh, 52, and their 22-year-old son, Paul Murdaugh, in 2021.
Last month, Audacy reported that he took the stand to testify.
This week, The New York Times reported that the jury on the case traveled to the site of the murders, even though it is “rare” for jurors to visit crime scenes. They reached a guilty verdict on all counts, which included two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
“Prosecutors have indicated they will seek life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murders, sparing him the death penalty,” said CNN. His charges carry a potential sentence of up to 30 years to life, CBS said.
Murdaugh also faces 99 separate charges related to alleged financial crimes, said CNN.
