Richmond, Va. (WVRA) - According to Richmond police, two people, an 18-year old and a 36-year old, have died following Tuesday afternoon’s shooting outside the Huguenot High School graduation at the Altria Theater.
Acting Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards shared with reporters on Tuesday night that police have a 19-year-old suspect in custody. The 19-year old is expected to be charged with second-degree murder.
The graduation was taking place at the Altria Theater, on the VCU campus.
“This should have been a safe space,” Edwards said. “It’s just incredibly tragic that someone decided to bring a gun to this incident and rain terror on our community.”

It is believed the suspect knew one of the victims, though a motive is still unknown at this time.
Edwards shared that a 9-year-old girl who was across the street from the Altria Theater was struck by a bullet and injured.
Richmond Public Schools are closed on Wednesday because of the shooting. Police and city officials expect to release more information soon.
Thomas Jefferson High School's graduation, which was supposed to take place Tuesday night, was postponed. All other graduations have been postponed until next week.
