The Center for Disease Control and Prevention have approved vaccinated teachers and students to go maskless at school.
In a statement released on Friday, the CDC issued new guidelines allowing vaccinated students and teachers to go maskless inside school buildings, if they choose, while their unvaccinated cohorts must keep the masks on.
“We're at a new point in the pandemic that we're all really excited about," said Erin Sauber-Schatz, leader of the CDC task force that prepares COVID-19 recommendations.
With the country seeing a general decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths, as well as a national campaign which allows children as young as 12 to get the vaccine, Schatz believed it was time to change the coronavirus guidelines.
The CDC has not provided any information urging schools to require vaccinations or any guidance on how to know if a child is vaccinated. The challenge now posed to schools is to navigate how they will record a student’s vaccination status.
Officials warn that this may make for a challenging dynamic once the fall school year starts again.
