(WWJ) -- “Everybody into the pool!” This is…if you can find one.

A combination of factors are leading to a nationwide shortage of pools and pool products for the second summer in a row, and increasingly warm weather likely won’t make things easier for those who are already on the hunt.

It is currently very hard to come by chlorine tablets, due in part to a fire at a Louisiana chemical plant that occurred last August after being damaged by Hurricane Laura.

The shortage, which is also because of an increased demand for pools following the pandemic stay-at-home orders last summer, has caused tablets that are still available to skyrocket in price. Additionally, propane tanks have become more difficult to find.

WWJ’s Mike Campbell spoke with Brendan Lawrence off Allstate Home Leisure in Livonia, Michigan, who recommends a chlorine-alternative salt product that they offer, which doesn’t burn swimmers’ skin or smell like chemicals.

He also noted that they currently have above-ground, round pools in stock, but the oval pools are all sold out.

Lawrence said his employees, who only install above-ground pools, are currently booked about a month out, but those who want an in-ground pool could be waiting a while.

“We don’t do in-grounds, but some of the people I know are like a year out, some are two years out,” he said. “It’s kind of crazy.”
