COVID-19 is already making an impact on the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
On Sunday, 17-year-old tennis star Coco Gauff announced that she will not be able to compete in the Olympic Games after testing positive for COVID-19.
Gauff, who has never competed in the Olympics before, posted the message on social media.
Gauff had just competed at Wimbledon, where she finished in the fourth round, and reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal earlier this year at the French Open.
Earlier on Sunday, organizers announced that two athletes in the Olympic Village tested positive for COVID-19, which was later confirmed to be members of the South Africa men’s soccer team.
Covid cases continue to rise in Tokyo, with the Games happening during a state of emergency that will last for the entirety of the Olympics and prohibit any fans from attending the events.
