CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The next generation of automobile is closer than you think.

Economist Andrew Busch told the WBBM Noon Business Hour that electric self-driving cars are undergoing testing in Arizona.

He anticipates that the cars will hit the road sooner rather than later.

"I think by 2025 there will be a country that says 'let's go for it, autonomous vehicles are fine,'" Busch said.

He said that widespread use of electric cars will have an immediate impact on air quality, and that self driving cars will eliminate common forms of traffic congestion.

"Looking at accidents, for example.  You don't have that kind of problem that occurs every day on I-90," Busch added.

He said he anticipates a future where people may not need to own a car to get around and instead could summon a self-driving car with an app.
