The official start of summer may still be about two weeks away, but it appears Mother Nature will be getting an early start as temperatures are set to skyrocket across the southwest United States in the coming days.

Parts of Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas will see their thermometers climb into the triple-digits as the weather warms.

Experts warn residents to remain vigilant and check on elderly relatives, neighbors and friends when possible. Excessive temperatures are responsible for more deaths in America per year than any other weather-related factors.

Heat waves claim more lives each year than floods, hurricanes and tornadoes combined.

Scientists have said that the increased frequency of extreme heat waves is part of the fallout from climate change and also a result of deepening droughts.

Around 42 million people are expected to be effected.
