Police arrested a former naval officer in Pennsylvania last Friday in relation to the gruesome murder of his wife, who was found dismembered, with her remains scattered throughout the Georgia woods.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation shared that their agents arrested 40-year-old Nicholas James Kassotis on felony murder, assault, and other charges in the death of his wife, Mindi Kassotis.

Kassotis’ arrest came a day after investigators identified his wife using DNA technology. The victim’s remains had been discovered in December throughout a 3-mile radius in the woods of a hunting club in Riceboro, officials shared.

To identify Mindi Kassotis, the GBI worked with the FBI and obtained DNA swabs from her relatives, officials shared.

Previous reports from the GBI said that investigators believed the victims’ remains were placed in the woods they were found on or around Nov. 27. However, for the last six months, her identity has remained a mystery.

Kassotis remains in custody in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he was arrested, as officials get ready to extradite him back to Georgia.

Kassotis is facing additional charges of malice murder, tampering with evidence, and removal of body parts from the scene of death or dismemberment, according to the GBI.

No motive has been shared at this time, as officials say the investigation remains ongoing.
