Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, UCSF Infectious Disease Specialist, told KCBS Radio that one of the most important things is to consider the destination.

"I would think about the destination just like when you're going to Boston or to New York, you look at the weather report, you think about what's going on there,” he said. For example, "right now we know that not only are cases increasing specifically in New York, D.C., the East Coast by more than 100%, we know that the sub variants are more common there."

If case rates are high, Chin-Hong said to step up the mask game, despite the nationwide mask mandate lift.

To maximize COVID-19 safety when embarking on a trip, Chin-Hong advised that travelers continue to mask up especially at the gate, be particularly wary at times when ventilation is not on and consider how vulnerable they are to getting seriously ill.

Those who are 65 or older and unboosted, immune compromised or unvaccinated should be even more careful when navigating flights, the UCSF doctor added.
