A new lawsuit alleges Exxon Mobil Corp. fostered a racially hostile environment at one of its facilities.

The United States Government has brought the suit against the oil giant after determining the company failed to properly investigate complaints of hangman’s nooses allegedly displayed at its Baton Rouge, La., location.

The suit stems from an incident where one such noose was found at a Black employee’s worksite. When he reported it, it was discovered that three other nooses had already been found at the facility, and that the company knew about all the incidents in question.

The suit claims Exxon Mobil failed to investigate all the incidents and also did not take actions that could have prevented the harassment.

Because of the company’s allegedly lax attitude, the suit says Exxon Mobil created a “racially hostile” environment for workers.

In response to the suit, a company spokesperson said Sunday in a statement that it does not agree with the allegations brought forth and that it “encourage(s) employees to report claims like this, and we thoroughly investigated.”
