Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has been continually giving advice and educating the public on the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the vaccine rollout continues, Fauci spoke to NBC’s Today Show, where he said by April it would be “open season” on vaccine eligibility in the United States.
Fauci said that by “the time we get to April,” anybody in any vaccine category could start to get vaccinated.
“I would imagine, and in fact I’m fairly certain, that as we get into and towards the end of April we’ll see … pharmacies, community vaccine centers [and] mobile units really stepping up the pace of vaccination,” Fauci said.
The doctor explained how it would take a couple of months to deliver vaccines across the nation. However, he predicted that herd immunity could happen by late summer.
With various highly-contagious COVID variants being reported in the United States, even those who have previously tested positive stand a chance of being reinfected.
Fauci is urging Americans that if these variants become dominant, people who previously had COVID-19 have a “very high rate” of contracting COVID again.
"If it becomes dominant, the experience of our colleagues in South Africa indicate that even if you've been infected with the original virus that there is a very high rate of reinfection to the point where previous infection does not seem to protect you against reinfection," Fauci said.
Fauci also stressed how important it is to get vaccinated. The doctor explained how vaccination can also stem the development of more mutations.
