
One person was killed and five were injured when an above-ground parking garage attached to Pace University building in the Financial District collapsed on Tuesday afternoon.
The garage on Ann Street near William Street collapsed 4:08 p.m., according to the FDNY.
Firefighters were carrying out a "major technical rescue" mission as of 4:45 p.m., according to the department.
The FDNY said multiple people are trapped and the building is unstable.
Pace University announced classes have been cancelled and students have been evacuated from nearby buildings.
NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said officials currently believe this is a structural collapse, not an act of terrorism.
Mayor Eric Adams has been briefed and is on the scene. Gov. Kathy Hochul said her office is "in close contact" with city officials.
Police are asking people to avoid the area.
