New Hampshire fifth grader Jackson Gilchrist says he just wanted to show his appreciation to his local fire department.
So, Gilchrist donated the entire contents of his piggy bank, amounting to $11 total, to the Salem Fire Department because they “do a lot for us.”
Gilchrist penned in a handwritten note to the fire department, “Thank you for protecting our town and putting out all of the fires and saving our lives.”
While the Salem Fire Department receives a ton of donation, fire chief Larry Bests says Jackson’s is the best.
He told FOX News, “It was a special donation. Just to know that it came from Jackson, who’s a fifth grader — in this day and age, that he wanted to thank the firefighters for what we do. We’re just here doing our jobs and providing service to the community, and it was special to us.”
The fire department recently shared a press release praising Jackson for exemplifying the department's mission statement: "We're here to help.”
The statement read:
Jackson’s simple gesture is really not so simple. It reminds each one of us what it means to be a member of the fire service: the smallest gesture can mean the world to another.
Chief Best also joked that young Gilchrist is "on their list" for recruiting when he’s of age to join the department himself!
