Last week, first responders in Florida rescued a woman that climbed into a storm drain, marking the third time in the last two years that she was rescued from such a situation.

According to the Delray Beach Police Department, Lyndsey Jane Kennedy was swimming in a canal in the city last Wednesday when they were called to the scene about a woman possibly in distress.

Officers located Kennedy and asked her if she needed help, but she reportedly ignored them and decided to climb into a storm drain pipe, refusing to come out, and instead crawling further into the culvert pipe.

Police shared that the pipe went under a nearby road, and firefighters who arrived at the scene were able to keep her between two sections as the Delray Beach Fire Rescue Special Operations Team pulled her out using a ladder and rescue harness.

This was not the first experience local authorities have had with Kennedy and storm drains, as the Delray Police Department shared that the fire department had rescued her from a storm drain in March 2021.

At that time, police said she had been missing for three weeks.

When explaining the 2021 disappearance, Kennedy told police she was swimming in a canal near her boyfriend’s house when she noticed a doorway and tunnel in the shallow part of the water, WPTV reported at the time. Wanting to see where it went, she entered the tunnels before realizing she was lost.

Kennedy was discovered after a woman noticed that she was yelling for help from inside the drain and called 911. When police were able to free her, she said that she was able to survive on an unopened can of ginger ale she found.

WPTV also reported that police contacted the woman’s mother after finding her. Her mother shared that she had a history of mental illness, frequently used illegal drugs, and had a history of “making bad decisions.”

The second rescue happened just two months after the first when she was found in a storm drain in Grand Prairie, Texas, after wandering off from a rehab facility, WPTV reported.

At that time Kennedy was admitted to a hospital for treatment, according to police spokeswoman Chelsea Kretz.

After last week’s storm drain experience, Kennedy was checked into a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries she sustained and further evaluation, police shared.
