Dogs have similar issues with pollen as humans and Dr. Brian Bourquin, veterinarian and founder of the Boston Veterinary Clinic told KCBS Radio that owners should look out for when their pup is scratching more than normal or has skin redness.

"So, springtime comes and a lot of our pets while they don't show it through sneezing will show it through skin allergies and other such symptoms," Bourquin said.

If the allergies progress he said it could result in alopecia, hair loss, crusting or skin infections. He said there are a couple of things owners can do to help prevent their dogs from experiencing allergies.

"First avoidance if you can that's not always the easiest thing if it's all pollens but if your dog is allergic to grass sometimes keeping them on the cement or on different paths if you go in the woods," he explained

He also recommended wiping the dog down or bathing them with dog-friendly shampoo after taking them out during allergy season.

Cats can also experience allergies but since they stay in the house more they tend not to have pollen issues. He said they tend to have food allergies and there is medication to help with that.
