Gunfire broke out on a resort beach in Puerto Morelos, Mexico on Thursday. Officials are describing the conflict as a confrontation between alleged members of rival groups of drug dealers.
Two were left dead as a result of the shootout. Guests of the nearby Hyatt Riva Riviera Cancun hotel were ordered to shelter in place amid reports of an active shooter on the premises. However, no guest injuries have been reported.
The resort is reportedly popular with U.S. tourists. A statement released by the Hyatt Hotels Cororporation on Thursday said the company was “aware of a developing situation” at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun, and were cooperating with local authorities in investigation of the incident.
“The hotel team is taking steps in an effort to ensure the safety of guests and colleagues,” the statement said, directing further questions to Mexican law enforcement.
The incident follows the killing of two female tourists at another resort in Tulum, which officials believe was another shootout between rival gangs.
