This was one heck of a hailstone in Hondo.
When the town south of San Antonio was blasted by storms on Apr. 28, the sky dropped a hailstone estimated at 6.4" in diameter. That's about the size of a honeydew melon.
The massive chunk of ice was retrieved by resident Lino Ramirez. He posted photos on social media, drawing the attention of the Austin/San Antonio office of the National Weather Service.
NWS Meteorologist Eric Platt said no Texas record currently exists for the largest hailstone, but he added this one could create a new category. Platt said a special extreme weather panel will investigate the Hondo hailstone.
A hail chunk that fell in the Texas Panhandle town of Wellington in 2019 measured six inches in diameter, and is regarded by some to be the largest in modern state history.
Platt spoke with KRLD's Russell Scott.
