Wildfires have been blazing across parts of the Hawaiian island of Maui, with authorities issuing evacuations in communities like Lahaina.

Leis Wright, a resident of Lahaina, shared the story of his harrowing escape with Vicky Moore and Emily Valdez on L.A. Morning News

“The highway road was blocked off from falling trees, so we had to go through other neighboring, other neighborhoods and to finagle our way around, which was just, you know, a line of traffic as we're driving away from it,” he said. “And then as you drive down this road, every single power pole is down, every single one is down. It’s even to the point where it blew so hard the middle of the power pole splintered.”

Wright said that while he saw Red Cross down the street from his house working to help people, Maui is going to need all the help it can get.

“To anyone out there that's ever been to Maui, now is the time to help,” he said. “If you like coming here and you like, you know, forget about your real life and being able to relax and have Mai Tais or whatever you like to do, help out because we're gonna build it back up and it's gonna be awesome, but we're gonna need help.”

Other areas that are being evacuated include the Kaanapali area and the Kula area, according to Khron-2.
