This March, a record-breaking Maine coon kitten was born in Kaukauna, Wisc. He’s been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the cat with the most toes.
While Erebus Anomaly is named after the Greek god of darkness due to his smoky gray fur, his soulful expression and many-toed stance are currently more adorable than they are intimidating, based off photos shared on his Facebook page, “Erebus Anomaly Life With 29 Toes”. There, you can find photos and videos of the kitten as well as information about his title-holding toe beans.
“We made this page so everyone can follow along and watch Erebus grow into those big paws,” the page explained. “We’ll be sharing plenty of pictures, videos and everyday moments as he grows. We’re so excited to share his journey with you!”
On one of his paws, Erebus has eight toes. On each of the others, there are seven. Cats typically have five toes on their front paws and four toes on their back paws, but Erebus’ father also defies the norm – he has six toes on each of his paws.
According to Guinness World Records, Erebus was measured on May 13 and he’s owned by Kendra Vandenbloomer and Hunter Nett. He dethroned the previous 28-toed record holder that had the title since 2002.
Maine coons are long-haired are native to America, and they are one of the largest domestic cat breeds, with large feet that have tufts, per The International Cat Association (TICA). Erebus is associated with the Wisconsin-based TICA registered breeder BlueNorthern Maine coons.
Since the news came out, Erebus has been featured in multiple news outlets, including the New York Post and a feature on Good Morning America. Vandenbloomer told GMA that Erebus’ 24-toed father came from Russia and that his mother hails from here in the U.S.
In addition to his remarkable paws, Erebus showed that he was a fighter earlier this year when he survived pneumonia and aspiration. He even spent time in an oxygen machine.
“I would say it’s definitely a miraculous recovery,” Vandenbloomer said. She also said she plans to keep him.
