As Russia's invasion of Ukraine nears the conclusion of its third week, the United States has sent four senators to Poland in an effort to show support for the help NATO has given Ukraine.
From Poland, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar shared her thoughts on the war with News Talk 830 WCCO's Vineeta Sawkar.
Klobuchar has been meeting with military leaders and other security officials while in Poland, and she shared that she is proud of the work being done to supply Ukraine with help.
"We came here to show our unity but also to show the Ukrainian people that we are with them," Klobuchar shared.
She continued praising Poland for all they have done to help Ukraine by taking in refugees, adding that the population of Warsaw, Poland's capital, has increased by 11% in the last two weeks.
"They haven't taken them into permanent shelters. They've taken them into their homes," Klobuchar said. "It's an extraordinary act of love and generosity from a country that itself has been invaded."
While working in Poland, Klobuchar shared that she has met with refugees and their stories of having loved ones still fighting in Ukraine is heartbreaking.
Klobuchar has also met with Polish and Ukrainian leaders and said that they are working on assisting Ukraine through three avenues: sanctions, humanitarian efforts, and military assistance.
As for what the U.S. can do to help even more as the war continues, Klobuchar said that passing the bill through Congress to get aid to Ukraine was a big help.
The senator also shared her thoughts on the possibility of China getting involved in the war and backing Russian forces. She said it would be "absolutely outrageous if that happened."
She added that U.S. diplomats are speaking with diplomats from China to make sure the nation, which has said it respects sovereignty and borders in the past, doesn't step in.
"It is my hope that they would have nothing to do with this illegal, tragic and horrific invasion of a democracy that Vladimir Putin has embarked on," Klobuchar said.
For those who want to help Ukraine but don't know what to do, Klobuchar said that simply showing your support for the nation and its people is noticed and helps.
