The Choco Taco was invented by Philadelphia ice cream company Jack and Jill back in 1983. The convenience store classic was bought by Klondike and was later found on ice cream trucks throughout the country. Klondike said an uptick in demand for other products prompted them to discontinue it
"It's one of those things where buy as trends and tastes change," Steve Christensen told KCBS Radio. "Yeah, know a lot of these companies both larger companies as well as your local ice cream shop theirs more worth selling and what's not."
Christensen the Executive Director of the North American Ice Cream Association and the Head Master at Scoop School said the Choco taco is a good example of consumer taste change.
"The ice cream industry as a whole has shown some great increase over the past couple of years, but some segments probably need to be reinvigorated or may be tweaked in order to have them relevant," he said.
The Ice cream market is constantly changing with new vegan and non-dairy products but sometimes it can only fill a void. Christensen explained that ice cream is a memory-based food and some of those established items that people have great memories of fall by the waste side.
"Many people have great memories of sharing ice cream on the back deck with grandma or going to dairy queen or somewhere after a baseball," he added.
