A gunman opened fire at a bar and bowling alley in Maine Wednesday night, killing at least 18 people and injuring 13.
Johnny Maffei, a reporter for CBS affiliate WGME, was covering the story all night.
“The reaction is a lot of shock amongst the politicians around here, and certainly the residents and even, some of the sheriffs and law enforcement too because it's not something you see every day,” he said on L.A.'s Morning News.
Mafeei went on to say met a man whose son was shot at the bar where the gunman opened fire.
“I was trying to keep in touch with them throughout the night because it was certainly a long night for him, and he gave me the unfortunate update this morning that his son was one of the ones that passed away,” he said.
Maffei said also spoke to a woman whose 23-year-old son was also shot.
“He was shot four times in the kidney, in the spine, in the back and he's on a ventilator right now,” he said. “Doctors did say the family would get to see him this morning. One of those little bright spots, just that tiny sign of hope in a story like this.”
A manhunt is now underway in the state as authorities search for 40-year-old Robert Card in connection with the shooting. Maffei said law enforcement was searching a boat ramp in Lisbon after a Subaru linked to Card was found in the area.
“Ever since [then], they've been conducting a manhunt in the area we've seen, it's sort of intensified a little bit over here lately,” he said. “We were about to just talk to one of the police chiefs, but then his radio and off he got a call of some reports of possible lead.”
Maffei said he learned Card does have a military ID and that he’s a firearms instructor.
