British Airways, Go Daddy, Vanguard, Last Pass, AT&T and Costco were among other websites loading slowly or showing “DNS failure” Thursday amid the outage. The Twitter page Down Detector reported many sites were down Thursday afternoon.

DNS services act like phone books for the internet, according to Cloudflare.com.

Content distribution network Akamai said in a website notice it’s investigating "an emerging issue with the Edge DNS service," and that it expects to provide an update on its service disruption around 1 p.m. Eastern Time.

Some users may be able to access the sites while others cannot, said CNBC.

While the outage persists, Delta customers can’t check in for flights or look up fares online. However, the company said customers can check in with a Delta agent at the airport.

"We’re experiencing temporary technical issues serving our customers on delta.com and the Fly Delta mobile app," said a message on Delta’s website. "We apologize for the delay, and are working to restore the site as quickly as possible."

Update: as Thursday afternoon, Akamai said in a tweet that a fix for the issue had been implemented.
