A Maryland man accused of fatally shooting three people and injuring three others in a June incident that started after a dispute over a parking spot has been charged.

On Friday, Charles Robert Smith, 43, was charged with 42 counts, including murder and hate crime charges, over his alleged shooting and killing of 27-year-old Mario Antonio Mireles Ruiz, 55-year-old Nicholas Mireles, and 25-year-old Christian Marlon Segovia, according to FOX 5.

The shooting allegedly started after Smith’s mother, Shirley Smith, and Mireles Ruiz got into an argument about a parking spot on June 11, 2023.

Court documents obtained by Fox News shared that Smith confronted the victims outside his home in Annapolis after the argument. The documents say that Smith was looking to discuss his mother’s grievance that a vehicle was blocking their driveway.

The encounter soon turned physical, with Smith allegedly pulling out a gun and shooting Mireles Ruiz and Segovia.

Court documents then allege that Smith shot a rifle at those who rushed to help the men who had been shot, and in doing so, he killed Nicholas Mireles, Mireles Ruiz’s father, and wounded three others.

Police responded to the scene, and Smith surrendered peacefully, allegedly telling them he only fired after his house was fired at.

Investigators learned the opposite from witnesses, who said they did not see any of the victims with firearms.

According to FOX 5’s report, a semi-automatic handgun and a long gun were recovered from the crime scene.

The indictment includes three counts each of first-degree murder and race/religious crime resulting in death and six counts each of attempted first- and second-degree murder and first- and second-degree assault, according to Fox News.

If convicted, Smith could spend the rest of his life in prison.
