Early on Sunday morning, a man crashed his car into a barricade near the U.S. Capitol Building and then shot and killed himself, according to the U.S. Capitol Police.

The Capitol Police shared in a press release that the incident happened shortly after 4 a.m. EST. The car crashed at a barricade at East Capitol Street and Second Street before the man got out of his car that was "engulfed in flames."

After exiting his vehicle, Capitol Police shared that he fired several shots from his weapon into the air before turning the gun on himself as the authorities approached him.

The authorities have not released the man's name, and it has not been reported if there were additional injuries as a result of the incident. However, they did share that it is not believed he was targeting any politician.

"At this time, it does not appear the man was targeting any Members of Congress, who are on recess, and it does not appear officers fired their weapons," the statement read. "Our investigators are looking into the man's background."

The investigation of the man's death has been taken over by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the statement shared.
