While attempting to flee the police, a Minnesota man hid inside a freezer in the basement of an abandoned home. However, the hiding spot proved to be too good as the man died inside the freezer and was only recently discovered by the authorities.

Brandon Lee Buschman, 34, was identified by the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Officer as the man found inside the freezer on June 26, according to a press release shared last week by the Gilbert Police Department.

Police shared that Buschman had an active warrant out for his arrest and was seen by witnesses fleeing from the upstairs of his Biwabik home after hearing that police were nearby.

The home had been abandoned since February of this year, and no utilities had been connected inside since April 2022.

Buschman went into the basement of the home and, “on his own accord,” entered the freezer, police shared. Unfortunately, the freezer was unable to be opened from the inside, leaving him trapped.

“Investigators located a metal lawn ornament rod that was inserted from inside of the freezer towards the latching mechanism,” police said in a news release. “The rod was jammed between the gasket and manufactured edge, preventing the rod from being able to manipulate the latching mechanism from the inside.”

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office’s autopsy revealed “no evidence of trauma or injury,” police shared.

It is still unclear when Buschman entered the freezer and how long he was there before his body was discovered.

“The reports from the individuals were very unclear to us as to exactly when it was that Buschman had fled,” Lt. Chelsea Trucano shared with the Duluth News Tribune.“We are continuing to work on some additional investigation to narrow if that means it was this year or last year and will provide that information at a later date once it is narrowed to a better timeline.”

Police shared that the final reports from the autopsy will be released in the coming weeks.
