Two types of Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs have been recalled by Stellantis, the parent company of Michigan-based Jeep manufacturer Chrysler.
Overall, 331,401 vehicles are involved in the recall: 114,302 Jeep Grand Cherokees from 2022-2023 and 217,099 Jeep Grand Cherokee L models from 2021-2023. Recalls for both models are related to a rear coil spring that may have been incorrectly installed.
This improper installation could allow the coil spring to come out of position and detach the from the vehicle while driving explained a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“Rear coil springs that detach from the vehicle while driving may result in a hazard to operators and occupants of other vehicles which can cause such vehicles to crash without prior warning and/or may result in injury to vulnerable road users,” said the NHTSA.
An investigation into the defect was opened in March after an initial report of the spring falling off while driving. A review of claims was conducted through May 17.
“The suspect period began on May 17, 2021, when vehicles with a potentially out of position rear coil spring started production, and ended on May 31, 2023, when FCA US LLC (Stellantis) no longer shipped vehicles with a potentially out of position rear coil spring,” said the report regarding the 2022-2023 Grand Cherokee models.
As of May 25, there were two customer assistance records, 17 warranty claims and two field reports potentially related to the recall. FCA US determined to conduct a voluntary safety recall on June 1.
According to the NHTSA report, there were some similar vehicles not included in the recall that were built after the suspect period or with an air suspension system. For the 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L models, the suspect period was Dec. 5, 2020 to May 31, 2023.
To remedy the issue, FCA US will inspect and repair the rear coil spring assembly in the impacted cars.
“FCA US has a longstanding policy and practice of reimbursing owners who have incurred the cost of repairing a problem that subsequently becomes the subject of a field action,” said the recall report. “To ensure consistency, FCA US, as part of the owner letter, will request that customers send the original receipt and/or other adequate proof of payment to the company for confirmation of the expense.”
The company plans to notify owners and dealers July 28.
