The nation’s highest-ranking military officer and principal defense advisor said it is “possible” the United States could engage the Taliban to cooperate in the fight against terrorists like ISIS.

“In war, you do what you must, even if it is not what you necessarily want to do,” Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a news conference Wednesday.

Intelligence analysts predict the Taliban could reveal plans for a new controlling government in Afghanistan this week.

“We don’t know what the future of the Taliban is, but I can tell you from personal experience that this is a ruthless group from the past, and whether or not they change remains to be seen,” Gen. Milley said.

U.S. military personnel coordinated with the Taliban for the safe evacuation of nearly 125,000 people in Afghanistan, and the two share a common enemy — the Islamic State.

ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the suicide bomber attack at the entrance to the airport in Kabul last week that killed 13 American service members and an estimated 170 civilians.
