Authorities in Boulder, Colorado said 10 people were killed in a shooting at a supermarket on Monday, including a police officer responding to the scene.

Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said officer Eric Talley, 51, had served with the department since 2010, acting in a number of roles.

She described Talley's actions Monday as "heroic."

"This is a very complex investigation that will take no less than five days to complete," Herold explained. "My heart goes out to the victims of this incident."

Earlier Monday, Boulder Police Cmdr. Kerry Yamaguchi told reporters that a person of interest is in custody and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, but didn’t give any further details, including a possible motive.

"My heart goes out to Eric Talley's family, his loved ones and his colleagues," Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty told reporters late Monday. "He was, by all accounts, one of the outstanding officers at the Boulder Police Department. His life was cut far too short as he responded to the shooting that was taking place at King Soopers."

The shooting was first reported the situation on Twitter at about 2:40 p.m.

Helicopter footage from a local television station showed a large law enforcement presence outside the King Soopers grocery store and at least three helicopters on the building's roof. A shirtless man with blood running down his leg could be seen on the live feed being escorted out of the store in handcuffs by two police officers.

The windows of the store appear to be broken, according to a bystander live video on YouTube.

A man who said he was shopping at the store told KCNC-TV he heard a loud bang, then heard another, and by the third, everyone was running. He said they ran to the back of the store, found the employee area and workers told them how to escape. They walked single file, arms on the backs of those in front of them.

"I kind of fled the store as soon as possible so I could get out of there and call my parents," a customer inside the store told KGMH.

An ambulance pulled away from the store, apparently carrying the bleeding man brought out of the store in handcuffs.

Footage showed officers helping people out of the store to safety.

Dean Schiller told The Associated Press that he had just left the supermarket when he heard gunshots and saw three people lying face down, two in the parking lot and one near the doorway.

He said he "couldn’t tell if they were breathing."

A person who answered the telephone at a nearby sandwich shop said he and his employees were locked down in the back of the store and all were safe. Someone who answered the phone at nail studio next door said she and her colleagues were safe. Neither had details on what happened at the market across the street.

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki tweeted late Monday.

The investigation remains ongoing.
