Poll finds majority of Greenland respondents support joining US

A new poll has found that a majority of respondents in Greenland support joining the United States after weeks of talk about annexation from President-elect Donald Trump.

The poll, released on Sunday and from Patriot Polling, notes that 57.3% of respondents approve of the US obtaining Greenland, while 37.4% disapprove and 5.3% are undecided.

Trump has said in recent days that obtaining the world’s largest island is an “absolute necessity” for the US during his administration.

During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago last week, Trump was asked if he would rule out using the military to gain control of the country, to which Trump said that he would not.

The survey, which polled 416 people in Greenland, is the first of its kind but has received criticism. According to FiveThirtyEight’s poll rankings, Patriot Polling only receives a ranking of one star out of three.

The poll was the group’s first outside-of-the-US survey, conducted during Donald Trump Jr.’s visit to the island.

During a joint press conference last Friday, the Prime Minister of Greenland, Múte Egede, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen discussed Trump’s plan to annex Greenland.

While Trump has floated concerns of national security, saying Greenland needs to be acquired by the US to address those concerns, Frederiksen’s team has been communicating with Trump’s team to try and avoid any issues, according to a report from Axios on Saturday.

As for Egede’s thoughts on the situation, he shared that his country and people no longer wish to be a part of Denmark but also don’t want to join the US.

“Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish. We do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic,” Egede said Friday.

However, he also noted that when Trump is, his team is “ready to talk.”
