A U.S. Postal Service worker in Mississippi died from injuries he sustained Thursday when a man attempting to evade police crashed into his vehicle, according to the Pearl Police Department.
Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart identified the postal worker as 32-year-old Brad Pennington, 32, WAPT reported. Pennington died at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Miss.
“Earlier today, a postal family member lost his life in a vehicular accident, which currently is under investigation. The U.S. Postal Service is deeply saddened at the loss of our employee, who had delivered mail for us since 2015,” said Debra J. Fetterly, a USPS spokesperson for the Alabama-Mississippi District, in a statement, according to WAPT. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his co-workers at this time.”
According to police, 20-year-old Brandon Andrews of Flowood, Miss., was speeding westbound in a Toyota Camry on Interstate 20 just before 11 a.m. Thursday when authorities attempted to pull him over for a traffic stop. When he failed to pull over, officers pursued him.
This chase continued westbound on I-20 and onto I-55 south into the Jackson city limits before Andrews crashed into Pennington’s postal service vehicle on Maria Drive just off McDowell Road.
Although Andrews fled the crash scene, authorities quickly located him and he was taken into custody. He was transported to the Pearl Police Department and later to the Rankin County Detention Center.
Andrews faces multiple charges. The Mississippi Highway Patrol, along with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Postal Service are investigating the crash at the request of the Pearl Police Department.
