Twitter will automatically transfer the official @POTUS presidential handle to President-elect Joe Biden on Inauguration Day.
This will happen even if President Trump refuses to concede the election.
President Trump’s personal account has already doubled in the number of followers of the official @POTUS account, since the president became well known for his Twitter activity.
“This one has 88.9 million followers,” said Frank Sesno, Director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University. “I’m afraid he’s going to lose some of those when he’s not President of the United States anymore, since a lot of folks are following him because they feel the need to, not because they want to.”
Sesno predicted that President-elect Joe Biden will use social media differently than President Trump has since 2016.
“He has tried to be more circumspect, certainly more soft-spoken than Donald Trump,” Sesno said.
With that said, Sesno added that there are ways Biden can learn from the way President Trump used Twitter.
“I do think, however, one of the big lessons Biden will take from President Trump’s use of social media is the incredible power that it has,” Sesno said.
All previous tweets from President Trump will be archived...and the POTUS account will be re-set to zero on Inauguration Day.
Other official accounts, including @whitehouse, @VP and @FLOTUS, will also transfer to the new administration.
