The product safety commission issued the recall on Wednesday for the Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch model of the fitness tracker.
In the U.S., Fitbit has received at least 115 reports of the watch's battery overheating, with 78 reports of burn injuries, two were third-degree burns, and four were second-degree burns, according to a press release. The release also shared that there have been 59 reports of overheating and 40 reports of burn injuries internationally.
The watches recalled were sold with a polyurethane band and have a 1.4-inch color LCD screen. The colors of the watches sold were slate blue/burnt orange, charcoal/smoke gray, blue-gray/silver-gray, and a special edition co-branded with Adidas in ink blue/silver-gray, a press release said.
The model numbers that can be used to identify the recalled watches, which can be found on the back of the device where the band attaches, are FB503CPBU, FB503GYBK, FB503WTGY, and FB503WTNV.
The watches were sold at Fitbit.com, Best Buy, Target, Amazon.com, Kohl's, and other stores nationwide from September 2017 through December 2021.
According to a press release, the agency said that those with one of the aforementioned smartwatches should contact Fitbit directly in order to receive pre-paid packaging to return the device. Once the company receives the device, consumers will then be issued a refund of $299.
In addition to the refund, Fitbit is also offering affected customers a discount code for 40% off select Fitbit devices, the press release said.
The agency also recommended that consumers "stop using the recalled Ionic smartwatches" immediately in its press release.
