WASHINGTON (KNX) — California Republican Representative Devin Nunes will be leaving Congress to take on the position of chief executive officer for former President Donald Trump’s social media platform, the elected official announced Monday.

In a press release, Trump Media & Technology Group said Nunes will step into the new role in January 2022.

"The time has come to reopen the Internet and allow for the free flow of ideas and expression without censorship,” Nunes said in a statement. “The United States of America made the dream of the Internet a reality and it will be an American company that restores the dream. I'm humbled and honored President Trump has asked me to lead the mission and the world class team that will deliver on this promise."

Trump praised Nunes in a statement, calling him a “fighter and a leader.”

“Devin understands that we must stop the liberal media and Big Tech from destroying the freedoms that make America great,” he said. “America is ready for TRUTH Social and the end to censorship and political discrimination."

Nunes, who currently serves as the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, has been representing California’s 22nd congressional district since 2003. He also led the House Intelligence Committee from 2015 to 2019.

A fervent supporter for Trump, Nunes was one of 147 House Republicans who voted to overturn the 2020 Election results.

Trump announced the launch of Trump Media & Technology Group, as well its upcoming “Truth Social” in October. According to the company website, the company aims to “even the playing field by providing people with open media platforms where they can share and create content without fear of reputational ruin.
