Not satisfied with becoming the first woman to appear in a Power 5 game, Vanderbilt kicker Sarah Fuller added to her legacy Saturday by sinking a pair of extra points in the Commodores’ loss to Tennessee. In doing so, the 21-year-old became the third woman to score in an FBS game and the first from a Power 5 conference.
A star goalkeeper on Vanderbilt’s SEC champion soccer squad, the senior from Wylie, Texas earned a football tryout last month with the team shorthanded due to COVID absences. With Vanderbilt needing healthy bodies, the 6’2” Fuller debuted on November 28th, booting the second-half kickoff in a loss to Missouri.
After having last week’s game against Georgia postponed (it was rescheduled for next week in Athens), Fuller returned to the field Saturday, making her home debut for the Commodores against in-state rival Tennessee. Unlike her previous game when Vanderbilt was held scoreless, Fuller was called on for a pair of PATs with both kicks finding the uprights. Pierson Cooke, who made one of his two field goal tries Saturday (he cashed in from 39 yards but misfired on his 54-yard attempt), took kickoff duties off Fuller’s plate this week.
There’s no sugarcoating it—it’s been a rough year for Vandy on the gridiron. Their head coach, Derek Mason, was just fired and the 0-9 Commodores are a loss away from completing a winless season, which would be a first in school history (and if you think they’re beating 12th-ranked Georgia next week, you need your head examined). But thanks to Fuller’s heroics, at least some good has come from an otherwise bleak season in Nashville.
