Are Donald Trump’s 34 felony indictments in New York some sort of “spiritual payback” for the former President? Rev. Al Sharpton believes so.
Sharpton made that belief known while speaking at a forum Tuesday at New York University, and he also called Trump’s indictment occurring on the 55th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination “ironic.”
“I’m always looking for the spiritual interpretation of something,” Sharpton said at the forum, according to the Washington Times. “And I think it’s very ironic that on the 55th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination, that the president that tried to turn back a lot of what King did is going to be arraigned in Manhattan Supreme Court by a Black DA.”
Sharpton added that he believes Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg will “deliver us justice.”
Trump’s indictment stems from an alleged hush-money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels in order to keep quiet a sexual escapade between the two ahead of the 2016 Presidential election, an election that saw Trump defeat Hillary Clinton.
Trump is accused of falsifying business records in relation to the source of the money used for that payment to Daniels.
The indictment comes amid Trump’s third Presidential campaign as he vies for the 2024 Republican nomination and a return to the White House for a second term after losing to Joe Biden in 2020.
