Five people were killed on Monday night when a single-engine plane crashed near an interstate highway in Nashville, Tennessee, authorities shared.
The pilot had made an emergency call to John C. Tune Airport just before 8 p.m. on Monday, reporting engine trouble in his aircraft.
The pilot had been cleared for an emergency landing. However, a short time later, the pilot reported they would not make it to the airport, Metro Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron shared with CBS News.
The department shared photos of the destroyed plane after it crashed on a grassy median just off Interstate 40 on the city’s westside.
In the post to social media, the department noted that “5 persons on board the airplane perished in the crash.”
While speaking with WTVF, Metro Fire Department Public Information Office Kendra Loney shared that there were two pieces of wreckage at the scene.
First responders quickly worked to gather the debris and secure the scene so that drivers passing by didn’t have any accidents.
No vehicles or buildings were damaged in the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
