Police in South Carolina arrested a woman who they believe is responsible for drowning her 6-year-old daughter before trying to kill another child last week, according to local authorities.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department shared on Facebook that deputies had arrested Jamie Michele Bradley-Brun, 37, in connection to her daughter’s death. She is now facing murder and attempted murder charges.
The department said that last Friday at around 1:25 a.m., deputies responded to a call at a home, where they discovered the body of Bradley-Brun’s 6-year-old child, Mackayla Bradley-Brun, who was declared dead at the scene.
Deputies quickly detained Bradley-Brun, saying that they received information from the emergency services dispatcher leading them to believe she was a suspect in the girl’s death.
“The early morning investigation revealed that Jamie Michele Bradley-Brun most likely drowned the 6-year-old,” the sheriff’s office said.
The department shared that investigators believe she then “attempted to drown an 8-year-old child” but was unsuccessful.
The older child yelled for help while Bradley-Brun allegedly attempted to drown them, resulting in other people in the home waking up and intervening, one of which called 911 for help.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Special Victims Unit-Department of Child Fatalities is assisting in the case, the department shared.
The investigation remains ongoing at this point.
