A strawberry moon will light up the night sky this week.
Michelle Nichols, with Chicago's Adler Planetarium, said the moon will appear full through Wednesday, but it will reach its peak Tuesday morning.
“The moon’s going to rise right around sunset time to the southeast, and it’ll be pretty low in the sky," Nichols said. "It’s only going to get, at most, about 20 degrees up … and then it’ll set right around sunrise.”
Despite the name, Nichols said, the moon won’t look exactly like a strawberry.
“The name does not refer to how the moon looks," she said. "It’s just a name that’s given for the fact that, [at] this time of year, strawberries are in season.”
The strawberry moon will coincide with a supermoon, which happens when the moon’s orbit is closest to the earth. That closer proximity will make the moon appear larger and brighter.
This will mark the second of four consecutive supermoons in 2022. According to Space.com, the next full moons will be July 13 and August 11.
