After U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) tweeted about President Joe Biden’s plans to celebrate the New Year in the U.S. Virgin Islands, he started getting trolled fast.
Many posters brought up Cruz’s notorious trip to Cancun in early 2021, when Texas experienced its worst freeze in decades.
It all started around 5 p.m. ET Tuesday, when Cruz tweeted “Enjoy St. Croix.” He was responding to a Fox News report about the president’s plans.
“It’s crazy but when you do your job, you can take a vacation,” said Tony Posnanksi. “Now tell us again how was Cancun when thousands of your Texas constituents had no power and were freezing?”
According to CNN, Biden and first Lady Dr. Jill Biden have vacationed in the Virgin Islands since the mid-2000s. USA Today noted that this is the first time a sitting president has visited the islands since Harry Truman delivered a 1948 speech in St. Croix.
Here’s just some of the feedback Cruz received on his tweet regarding Biden’s vacation:
“You, of all people? Seriously?” asked Brian Tyler Cohen.
“You’ve tainted Cancun so he had to go elsewhere,” said Will Pascoe.
“Cancun!” said Steve Gunn.
“What an odd flex from Cancun Ted,” said Cameron Atfield.
“Sit this one down, honey,” said Pedro Andrade.
However, U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) criticized Biden for going to the Caribbean while parts of the U.S. deal with severe winter weather that has claimed lives.
“MASSIVE winter storms paralyzed the country and Biden was taking a beach vacation in the Caribbean,” he said.
“The first couple arrived in St. Croix on Tuesday, along with family members, a gathering of the tight-knit clan who, according to several people with knowledge of recent conversations who have spoken to CNN, have now pledged support for another White House run by Biden,” said the outlet.
According to USA Today, “the White House has said Biden and his family plan to use the holiday break to discuss whether he should run for a second term in 2024. Biden has said he intends to run, but no formal decision has been made.”
Former Republican President Donald Trump, who Biden beat in the 2020 presidential election, has already announced he plans to run in 2024.
“Advisers are already preparing the president’s annual State of the Union address, typically delivered in late January or early February, viewing the speech as an opportunity to lay down the stakes and themes that Biden could adopt on the campaign trail,” said CNN of the Democrat incumbent.
The Bidens are expected to return to Washington Jan. 2, per USA Today.
