New data from the Guttmacher Institute reveals that over 28,000 Texans crossed state lines in 2024 to receive abortion care - the highest number of any U.S. state, accounting for nearly one-fifth of all out-of-state abortion patients nationwide.

Advocates point out that these journeys come with heavy burdens - travel costs, lodging, childcare, lost work days, and emotional strain - underscoring how Texas’s near-total abortion ban creates serious access barriers.

Meanwhile, Texas legislators are advancing measures like Senate Bill 33 to block local funding for such travel, and AG Ken Paxton has successfully halted San Antonio’s proposed $100,000 travel assistance program, citing legal restrictions.
