With Christmas less than two weeks away, time is running out to get your packages in the mail to ensure that they'll arrive before the holiday.

For loyal FedEx patrons, the shipping deadline is Wednesday, but for those who use the United States Postal Service, they have a bit more time.

It is the busiest time of the year for USPS mail carriers. "Regular volume (of packages) is usually about 100 to 200," Chi Man, a San Francisco USPS carrier, told KCBS Radio. "I think during the holiday season it can reach to about 300 a day." This increase in packages is on top of regular mail deliveries, he added.

Friday is the deadline to guarantee that first class USPS packages arrive before Christmas, but if you're late, Man said not to worry, you do have options. "If you want to do a more expensive option do Priority Mail Express, which is next day shipping," he said.

Despite the holiday increase, USPS has seen an overall decline in packages this year as Amazon took over its own deliveries earlier in 2021. "It's kind of relieving on our part, not so much on the company," Man said.

Despite some early staffing shortages, Man affirmed that USPS is equipped with a full complement of carriers to get packages to doorsteps in time for Christmas.
