As NBC is the latest to announce it is stepping away from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association amid criticism over its diversity and will not air the 2022 Golden Globes Monday, actors like Tom Cruise are returning their trophies.
“However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right,” NBC said as reported in an AP story. "As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”
Cruise is returning three of his statues, according to The Hollywood Reporter. NBC's response comes after others like Netflix and Warner Bros. also indicated they were not OK with the lack of diversity and growth. Cruise won a statue for his movie, Jerry Maguire, among others.
This comes after an LA Times investigation that found that none of the association's voting members are Black.
"The press association has pledged to thoroughly reform, and last week approved a plan to, among other things, diversity its membership. But that hasn't stopped several studios from threatening to pull out of the Globes," the AP story reported.
Others in the industry like actors Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson have also voiced their concern and disapproval.
