Following the news that President Joe Biden had dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, former President Donald Trump refused to take his foot off the gas, hammering Biden on social media.
“Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve - And never was! He only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his Basement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The remark was only the first of many that he levied at Biden and potentially his new opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.
Days before Biden dropped out of the race, it was announced that he had a positive COVID-19 test and was experiencing mild symptoms.
In response to this, Trump questioned if the diagnosis was even real.
“Does anybody really believe that Crooked Joe had Covid? No, he wanted to get out ever since June 27th, the night of The Debate, where he was completely obliterated,” Trump wrote, referring to Biden’s poor debate performance last month. “That was the big moment in Joe Biden’s demise. That was the point in time when Joe was revealed for what he is, an incompetent man who should never have been President. Joe Biden is not fit to serve - He is destroying our Country!”
“Biden never had Covid. He is a threat to Democracy!” he wrote in a separate post.
Trump also hammered Biden on his mental abilities, saying that he was going to forget he dropped out.
“It’s not over! Tomorrow Crooked Joe Biden’s going to wake up and forget that he dropped out of the race today!” he wrote.
Biden, 81, made his announcement on Sunday afternoon, posting a letter to social media about his decision to step aside and solely focus on finishing out his term.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden shared.
While many within his party offered their thanks for his service, Trump and Republicans instead called on Biden to also resign from office, saying that if he can’t run for another term he shouldn’t finish out his current one.
“Who is running our Country right now? It’s not Crooked Joe, he has no idea where he is. If he can’t run for office, he can’t run our Country!!!” Trump wrote.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) offered a similar comment on Sunday, saying Biden should also resign from his post.
Biden has not commented other than the announcement he has dropped out and his support for Harris to be the nominee.
