After reports that former President Donald Trump wasn’t stepping up to help his ally, Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor’s son revealed that Trump held a $100,000 per-plate fundraiser for him.
Giuliani is facing mounting legal bills related to several legal issues, including the recent RICO indictment in Georgia that also includes Trump and 17 other defendants. He’s also dealing with a defamation case in Georgia, a lawsuit from his former associate Noelle Dunphy and a lawsuit from voting machine companies Dominion and Smartmatic.
Andrew Giuliani, a host for WABC, revealed information about the fundraiser first in a text message to his colleague. He then got on air to discuss the Thursday event at Bedminster Golf Club in New Jersey.
The Hill and the Associated Press reported that the event had a $100,000 per-plate donation fee.
“They ended up having lunch just on Monday,” said Andrew of his father and Trump. Both have been accused of promoting false claims about election fraud regarding the 2020 presidential election, which Trump lost to current President Joe Biden.
While Andrew didn’t reveal the names of donors who planned to attend the Thursday fundraiser, he did say that even before it was held he expected to raise more than $1 million. That won’t be enough to cover all of his father’s legal fees, said Andrew, who added that Trump has committed to another event at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida in the fall or early winter, before the Iowa caucuses.
Some people who were not able to attend the Bedminster event still donated, Giuliani’s son said. He characterized his father’s legal issues as “political prosecution.”
“He has more conviction, he’s more resolute than ever,” said Andrew of his father.
