Uber and Lyft have decided to drop masking as part of their safety policies, as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

"As of April 19, 2022, riders and drivers are not required to wear masks when using Uber," said a statement posted on the company's website. "However, the CDC still recommends wearing a mask if you have certain personal risk factors and/or high transmission levels in your area."

"Remember: many people still feel safer wearing a mask because of personal or family health situations, so please be respectful of their preferences," the statement added. "And if you ever feel uncomfortable, you can always cancel the trip."

Lyft issued a similar message to its website in the wake of the ruling, citing the CDC’s updated policies.

"The CDC recently updated its guidance for transportation, and masks are now optional in all rides," said the statement. "We know that everyone has different comfort levels when it comes to health safety. So you can keep wearing a mask, if you'd like to, when you ride or drive."

The company reminded passengers and drivers to continue treating each other with kindness and respect, and not drive or ride if they are feeling symptomatic.

Lyft also included that masks are still required by law in some places and encouraged riders and drivers, "to check their local public health requirements before using Lyft," the statement added.
