"It requires, right now U.S. truckers who are crossing the border to be vaccinated because those rules have been after some pressure waived for Canadians who are crossing," Matthew Hockenberry told KCBS Radio

Hockenberry is a professor at Fordham University in New York who studies global production lines. He said the new rules - which go into effect next week - are likely to cause even more supply chain delays. He said the trucking industry was hit hard early on in the pandemic.

"A lot of truck drivers – it's an older demographic particularly in long haul trucking – they decided 'I'll just retire' or 'I'm going to do something else' they left the industry, and that is where we really get into that retention problem," he said.

Now there are tons of trucking jobs available, many are offering big signing bonuses.  But Hockenberry said long-haul trucking just doesn't pay what it used to before the government deregulated the industry in 1980.
